Sri Lanka

There’s no place on Earth quite like Sri Lanka. This beautiful island off the coast of India is home to not only lush rain forests teaming with elephants, giraffes, buffalos and even turtles. It is a land of temples, tea fields, spices, cuisine and some of the world’s kindest and most welcoming people. Unfortunately it has also been a land of tumult and hardship.

Sri Lanka is Peter’s ancestral home and the place that first fostered his love of cooking. As a young boy peering over the stove while his grandmother mixed a myriad of spices to create the perfect curry Peter’s love of Sri Lanka continues to shine through his cooking to this day.

In 2011 SBS Food and The Precinct created ‘My Sri Lanka with Peter Kuruvita‘, a revolutionary cooking series taking foodies into the heart, and kitchens, of Sri Lanka.

Peter’s acclaimed series won a Logie award that year and has put Sri Lanka on the menu as a travel destination for food lovers around the world.

Check out Peter’s “10 Things I Love About Sri Lanka” video below:

In early 2013, adventurous travel company World Expeditions teamed up with Peter for a truly incredible tour of Sri Lanka. Peter led a group of travellers through his home country, visiting spice fields, elephant care homes and even turtle sanctuaries. Due to the success of the tour two more have been schedule for late 2013 and early 2014.

World Expeditions has also released an entirely new tour, “Jewels of Sri Lanka’s North and East with Peter Kuruvita” to run for the first time in mid-2014.

This 13-day will take travellers to the hidden corners of Sri Lanka. From the beach-side west coast region of Negombo, we’ll travel to the ancient capital Anuradhapura visiting its world heritage listed ruin sites before heading to Jaffna in the far north of the country. Jaffna is a special place and due to wars and tumult few outsiders have been able to witness its beauty in a long time.

After that it will visit Trincomalee and have a coastal feast, Arugambay, Yala National Park, Nuwara Eliya for a class and a tour with a TeaMaster Class and Tea Inspired Dinner, Kandy, visit Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage and learn to make hoppers, then the Spice Gardens and Habarana.

Sri Lanka is an enchanting land of riches in many ways, to learn more about it and to visit the place with Peter himself, book your spot on the next World Expeditions tour of Sri Lanka HERE. And for the new ‘Jewels of Sri Lanka’s North and East’ tour CLICK HERE.
