Mt Lavinia is a picturesque spot, even by Sri Lankan standards. Located south of Colombo most of the tourist accommodation here is made up of sea side villas and holiday houses. You’ll be looking at around $90 per night for a gorgeous villa..a little cheaper than our land of Oz.
There’s an interesting legend behind how this place got its name. The tale goes that when the Governor General of Ceylon arrived on the island he immediately fell in love with a local dancer named Lovinia. It was against rules and customs for a man of his rank to take up with a peasant girl so they saw eachother in secret via tunnels from his wine cellar to her father’s well.
A statue of Lady Lavinia still stands in the water fountain at the entrance to the Mount Lavinia Hotel. There are other fables for how the town got its name but that’s my favourite.
I’m on my way to Mt Lavinia Surf Club for some filming with SBS Food. To get to the surf club you have to cross the rail line..without the assistance of a rail bridge.
My crew and I are waiting patiently until we’re clear enough to cross the tracks and push on so I thought I’d share a little video with you all in the meantime.
I hope you’re all enjoying my trip so far, I know I am. Please comment and let me know what you think!
